Interesting stuff I came across this week

Parents, at least those in the U.S., feel that communication skills are most important for children to learn followed by reading, math, teamwork, writing and logic. Science fell somewhere in the middle. Among parents, mothers highlight this importance more than fathers do. Read the Pew analysis here.
The Institute for Consumer Antitrust Studies of the Loyola University, Chicago has two online courses if you're interested in competition law. And on competition, Whither CCP? Never expect the media to be your ally or supporter. This is major blowback and as Ian Read said, "You Gain Respect in Drops, But Can Lose It in Gallons." Eric Shinseki said that one doesn't get many do-overs in life. He also said that one's going to miss 100% of the shots one's not going to take.
Nutella...cause-and-effect? And speaking of ISIS, The Wall Street Journal blames Turkey for its rapid growth in recent years.A former senior bureaucrat talks about governance overhaul.
Unhappiness with the political system is a common factor in many emerging economies. We talk of reforms in Pakistan...and talk...and talk...and talk...
Happy 10th Birthday, Youtube! I'm sorry that you've been banned in Pakistan for the last two and half years!
Robert Plant feels the future is more interesting than the past. A lesson for those of us stuck in the past.
Want to live longer? Eat well, exercise, deal with stress, and...win an Oscar!
Lean in?...or just leave? Women and tech don't seem to be a good fit anymore. The New York Times had a similar story from across the World.
Drink coffee...lots of it!

Musings 7 May 2014

"Call it magic or call it true." This morning, my son, Nael, and I were watching the video for Coldplay's new single, Magic. Chris Martin's handwritten lyric sheets for their new album, Ghost Stories, can be found here . It's a funny thing with Coldplay. I don't consider myself a major fan but that hasn't stopped me from buying all their CDs. Oh, well... some sort of 'conscious uncoupling' here? Do you remember the movie Wicker Park when The Scientist played near the end. They couldn't have chosen a better song to fit the scene. Interesting, the word Ghost. The Police's Ghost in the Machine (1981) was an excellent album and I like the Cure song, The Hungry Ghost (on 4:13 Dream, released in 2008. Looking forward to a new Cure album this year) Al Gore's book, Earth in the Balance , remains a favourite of mine. Which is why I would like to get a hold of Our Choice . Looked at in the context of our planet's history, what we're do...
